The South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS) is advising all Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients to immediately change their personal identification numbers (PINs) to protect their benefits from theft. This warning comes after the discovery that more than 350 SNAP beneficiaries in the Sioux Falls area had their benefits stolen.
An investigation revealed that skimming devices were likely placed on point-of-sale terminals at the Walmart Supercenter on East Arrowwood Parkway and at several Dollar General stores in Sioux Falls. These devices illegally captured individuals’ SNAP account numbers and PINs, which were then used to process fraudulent transactions out of state.
In response, DSS has taken steps to limit out-of-state transactions and has been working with local retailers to inspect terminals for any unauthorized devices.
To help protect their benefits, SNAP recipients are urged to take several precautions:
- Change your PIN frequently. Choose a PIN that is difficult for others to guess.
- Monitor your account. Regularly review transaction and deposit histories.
- Utilize the ebtEDGE Mobile app. The app allows users to block online and out-of-state transactions, freeze their card when not in use, and sign up for text or email alerts for any account activity.
Individuals who suspect their benefits have been stolen should report the theft to law enforcement. More information and resources are available at dss.sd.gov or by contacting a local DSS office.
